Institute of Mosaic Art
Upon entering the doors of the eye-catching purple structure on the corner of Chapman and Derby Streets, visitors at Institute of Mosaic Art are greeted by delightful bursts of color, energy and incredible art. Founded in 2005 by mosaic artist and instructor, Laurel True, IMA has changed the face of Mosaic Art in the United States.
Nearing its first anniversary, IMA has become a favorite hot spot for Oakland residents and tourists alike who come to see the glistening mirrored Isaiah Zagar mural located in the back garden area and the exhibitions that grace the colorful hallways. On Friday nights, IMA hosts local, national and international artists and scholars who present slide lectures and presentations celebrating the mosaic arts. A wide variety of classes accomodate mosaic artists from beginning to professional levels and provide a solid foundation for engaging with this type of art.
The building that houses IMA is also home to Mosaic Studio Supply, the only Mosaic supply store in Northern California. The 5000 square foot building also contains a mosaic resource library, exhibition space, a production studio for commissioned work and an impressive outdoor courtyard.
